We are listening to Michelle Obama’s Becoming through Audible. One of the stories she tells is very instructive on how creative people can be. She had a long ride to school on city buses. If she got on at her stop, she would have to stand for an hour and not be able to use that time to study. So she and a friend would take the bus going the opposite direction for a couple stops, get off, cross the street, get back on in the direction they were heading but before a major stop where people got on. They’d have seats for the entire hour plus journey. I wanted to share this example with Julia and asked her (because she wasn’t listening to the story the night Emma and I were) to brainstorm on how one could get a seat and what Michelle Obama might have been clever enough to figure out.
Without missing a beat and exercising that darling sense of mischievous humor that she exhibits occasionally when she is breaking out of her shy mold, Julia said, “Yell, ‘FREE FOOD out here!’ to the passengers on the bus and they’d all run out and you could run in and grab a seat?”
