Here are a couple of recent stories one
about her experience in a school that doesn't know what nori
is and the other about heaven:
Julia
brought one of her favorites, nori (Japanese dried
seaweed), for snack this week. She said a bunch of kids came up to her to
ask what it was. She responded “nori.”
They said, “What’s that?” She answered, “seaweed.” She said many of
them yelled, “Eewww!” and ran away. She said,
“I was so embarrassing (SIC).” I asked whether her teacher said anything
(thinking the teacher should intervene and talk to kids about not excluding, bullying,
making fun of others because of differences). She said, “No. I
don’t think she would think it would be nice to say ‘eeww.’”
(I thought it was interesting that my question on whether the teacher said
anything was interpreted by Julia as thinking there was a chance that the
teacher would have joined in in the poking fun of . .
. )

·
Julia: “Mom. You know how
some people die right when they’re born so they’re still babies when they die?”
·
Mom: Yes?
·
Julia: “And you know how they go
to heaven?”
·
Mom: Yes?
·
Julia: “Well, do they go to
heaven as babies and stay babies? Or do they get a chance to grow up into
adults in heaven?”
